{"id":577,"date":"2019-10-14T02:54:28","date_gmt":"2019-10-14T02:54:28","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/diversity.csl.org\/?p=577"},"modified":"2019-10-14T02:54:28","modified_gmt":"2019-10-14T02:54:28","slug":"race-is-a-significant-factor","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/csl.org\/diversity\/race-is-a-significant-factor\/","title":{"rendered":"Race is a Significant Factor &#8230;"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<p><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Even though scientific research has\nproven race to be more a social construct than a biological reality, race is a\nsignificant factor in human interaction\u2014and not a factor that needs to be\nignored. While conversations about race and racial issues may be uncomfortable,\nthese conversations are also an opportunity to grow, to understand, to build\nbonds. And in these days when ideas of \u201cseparation\u201d and \u201cdivision\u201d and\n\u201cother-ness\u201d are so much in the spotlight, building bonds and understanding our\nbrothers and sisters who look, worship, live, and speak differently than we\ndo&#8212;is a very worthwhile use of our time. Many people like to say things like,\n\u201cThere\u2019s only one race\u2014the human race,\u201d and they believe that to be a more\nuplifted thought about humanity.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>While the statement is spiritually\naccurate, practically speaking, it\u2019s limited and simply not reflective of the\nday-to-day reality in which we live. Another statement that tends to go along\nwith that idea is, \u201cI don\u2019t see color.\u201d While that statement is usually\nwell-intended and meant to infer that the person is not biased or prejudiced\nand they don\u2019t make differences based on a person\u2019s race, what it means is\nactually something quite different. To tell a person of color that you don\u2019t\nsee color\u2014is to tell them that you don\u2019t see the totality of who they are. That\nstatement says to them that the life experience they are having, which, of\ncourse, is impacted by their race, is not all that significant, interesting or\nworthwhile.&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>It\u2019s completely acceptable to\nacknowledge someone\u2019s race; in fact, it\u2019s preferable and can lead to real\nunderstanding and bonding. That doesn\u2019t mean race needs to be a constant topic\nof discussion, but neither should it be intentionally ignored because it\u2019s\nuncomfortable. The Divine is expressed in a variety of languages, cultures,\nlifestyles and races. Let us be courageous enough to move beyond the fear and\ndiscomfort and embrace each other for all that we are and for all that we bring\nto the world.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong><em>Affirmation:<\/em><\/strong>&nbsp;&nbsp;There is one Source and\nfrom that Source are many expressions. I acknowledge the Perfection of each and\nevery human being and the fullness of their unique, individual\nexpression.&nbsp;&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong><em>Invitation to\nAction:<\/em><\/strong>&nbsp;&nbsp;If\nyou have contact with people from other races\/ethnicities, invite someone out\nfor coffee or lunch. If you don\u2019t have that exposure, consider joining a local\nMeet Up group that provides opportunities to meet people from all walks of life\nat&nbsp;&nbsp;<a href=\"http:\/\/meetup.com\">meetup.com<\/a>&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;There\nare numerous websites that offer opportunities to connect with people, in\nperson or online.
