Their answers were smart, thoughtful, and carefully considered.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>When asked what qualities make\nfor a good leader, one of them replied, \u201cgood listening.\u201d All three then\ncontinued to demonstrate exactly how that is done, listening attentively to the\nothers\u2019 responses before building and expanding upon them in turn. It was truly\na dialogue \u2013 that is to say, ideas were exchanged, not hammered or yelled or\nperformed.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>That Aboriginal women are leading their communities with increasing frequency may not come as a surprise.\u00a0 Traditional Aboriginal beliefs  have viewed women as autonomous, with key roles as givers and caretakers of life. Women frequently had functions within spiritual ceremonies and within Aboriginal governments. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u2026. A few key reflections made by\nthese leaders when they were asked to think about their own leadership styles.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>From their unique perspectives as\nAboriginal women leaders, they offered several valuable pieces of advice that\nare, universally applicable and universally important. If followed, these\nsuggestions might help any person&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/www.canadianwomen.org\/blog\/everyday-leadership\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">become\na leader<\/a>&nbsp;in her or his own way.\n&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\"><li><strong>Speak out against stereotypes.&nbsp;<\/strong>If you hear them or see them, stop them.<\/li><li><strong>Learn your history.&nbsp;<\/strong>It will help you lead today if you know what happened yesterday.<\/li><li><strong>Get support and inspiration from those who surround you.&nbsp;<\/strong>These women spoke of being inspired by members of their staff or members of their family. Inspiration doesn\u2019t have to come from somewhere lofty and above you. &nbsp;<\/li><li><strong>If you have something to say, write it down, wait 24 hrs, and read it again before you say it.&nbsp;<\/strong>(This just seems like good, sensible advice for all, leaders or no.)<\/li><li><strong>Seek balance.&nbsp;<\/strong>Be healthy, consult with elders and mentors, and give thought to your place in the world.<\/li><li><strong>Build relationships.<\/strong><\/li><li><strong>Be  diplomatic.<\/strong><\/li><li><strong>Be transparent.<\/strong><\/li><li>And perhaps most importantly:&nbsp;<strong>communication is key. Be a good listener and listen for the voice that may not be there.<\/strong><\/li><\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p>\u2026\u2026\u2026.. Aboriginal communities, led\nby fierce women have a great deal to teach us on any number of topics.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>We just need to do as Chief Donna Big Canoe suggested&#8230;&#8230;&#8230;.. learn to listen.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>Affirmation:<\/strong> I am a good listener.
