Leadership Council Update
By Dr. Heather Dawn Clark, Chair
Certificated Courses Needed for Practitioner Studies - Recently I participated in a focus group at which I learned that many senior ministers were not aware of the changes that we have made to the requirements for Practitioner Studies. The Leadership Council approved the policy as put forward by the Education Committee in May. The number of courses has been changed from seven to six (we combined the two Consciousness Studies). Therefore, the requirements for entering Practitioner I in the fall of 2015 will be to have taken one course from each of the following sections:
I FOUNDATION LEVEL COURSEWORK – Choose 1 among the following 3 courses as the prerequisite for the subsequent courses:
New Foundations of the Science of Mind
Beyond Limits
The Spiritual Path (SOM 101) PLUS Spiritual Mind Treatment (SOM 102)
II. THE ESSENTIAL ERNEST HOLMES
III. TROWARD COURSEWORK – Choose 1 among the following 3 courses:
The Edinburgh Lectures (SOM 207)
Thomas Troward: Edinburgh Lectures
Creative Process in the Individual (SOM 213)
IV. HISTORY/PHILOSOPHY COURSEWORK – Choose 1 between the following 2 courses:
Exploring Roots
From Whence We Came
V. CONSCIOUSNESS COURSEWORK (Part A & B have been combined) –Choose 1 among the following 6 courses:
Treatment and Meditation: Spiritual Practices for Daily Living
Power of Your Word
Building a Healing Consciousness (SOM 103)
Meditation is More Than You Think
Practical Mysticism
Self-Mastery: The Emergence of the True Self
VI. ELECTIVE – Choose 1 course from the vast selection of all other Certificated Courses
You can find this information on page 18 of the Education Catalog. I intend to help clarify the requirements so you can more comfortably plan the coursework in your center during the next two years.
Ministers Council Update
By Dr. Barbara R. Waterhouse, Chair
The Minister Council met for two days in Monterey prior to the Asilomar conference. In our first face-to-face meeting since the few minutes we had together in Vancouver, we used ritual to connect and share who we are and then opened up to ideas about what the Minister Council is and could be.
We explored ideas of being vision keepers and vision casters, mentors, a mouth piece from minister to minister and minister to Home Office, minister support, and ongoing treatment for the ministers of Centers for Spiritual Living. We became more focused with ideas of being advisors, advocates, and liaisons.
Our Mission Statement revealed itself as:
“The Minister Council supports and serves all ministers of Centers for Spiritual Living in creating prosperous, healthy, and vital ministries.”
We have been together not even six months, yet we have set up our first Centers for Spiritual Living Ministers’ Gathering this October in Napa, CA, reviewed the requirements for ordination, and began a solid basis for this council to support the ministers and ministries of this movement for decades to come.
We are honored to serve in this way. If you have any comments or want to speak to any of the members of this council, please feel free to contact us:

Practitioner Council Update
By Linda Watson, Practitioner Emeritus, Chair
Still savoring my Asilomar spiritual retreat experience. Navigating up the Pacific coast every August to the beautiful Monterey Peninsula has become an annual pilgrimage for me during the past 20 years. Deep friendships, special moments and memories, and powerful transformational experiences will forever remain etched in my heart and soul. Although Centers for Spiritual Living has decided not to schedule a retreat at Asilomar for 2014, I stand with many others in joyous anticipation of being open to something new; it’s not possible to move forward while holding on to what was. We asked practitioners at the conference to hold the highest for the unfoldment of how and where our community will meet in the future – and I invite all reading this to join us.
The Practitioner Council convened for a pre-conference planning meeting where we reviewed our programs and our work together. We're especially excited about launching the PLUS program (Practitioner Leadership Unity Summit) designed to bring practitioner team leaders from each center together to connect, build community, and initiate regional collaboration. Our Practitioner Representative (PR) program continues to move forward, building momentum and energy. We have welcomed several new PRs and are thrilled that almost every region is filled. On August 19th, you should have received an email notification of our next series of quarterly conference calls scheduled for September 21st, 23rd, and 28th. These calls offer inspiration, resources, spiritual practice, and connection.
It was wonderful to assemble for our Practitioner Town Hall gathering, engaging in spiritual practices, laughing, and singing, and experiencing loving support and camaraderie. Another highlight of the week for me was serving on the licensing panels for the online practitioner students where we witnessed nine new practitioners “cross the threshold” and become licensed. Kudos to Dr. Christina Tillotson and her team for their stellar work with the distance learning program.
As we get ready to shift into the fall season, it’s time to start planning our trips to Orlando for the 2014 Spiritual Living Convention scheduled for February 16 – 21. It’s going to be a W.O.W. experience!
Continuing to hold the highest for Centers for Spiritual Living, each ministry, our ministers, practitioners, and laity. We are blessed to be walking this extraordinary path together! If you would like to be in contact, you can reach me at lindajoy99@aol.com or by calling (714) 585-5070.
Laity Council Update
By Layne Taylor, Chair
The Laity Council is motivated, empowered, and recommitted after attending the Asilomar Spiritual Retreat and having an opportunity to work together, face-to-face, as a team for the first time. We were also pleased with the opportunities we had to share our work and vision with the Leadership Team and fellow lay members. And of course, we are always grateful to the ministers and practitioners who support us. Two of our council members, Crystal Davis and Mari Avicolli, also led workshops of their own.
We were especially grateful for the opportunity to create a Town Hall meeting filled with exceptional content. The theme for our day was “Contribute” and our presenters each addressed that concept in great ways. Rev. Michelle Synegal motivated us with information regarding the World Day of Service and Dr. Jim Lockard shared the details of the new Disaster Relief Fund. Both of these worthy causes provide opportunities for laity to serve in a greater way. Evan Dow-Williamson represented the Young Adult Leadership Team with a powerful message and the fabulous Amy Steinberg inspired with her wonderful music.
We were able to stream a portion of the program live before being interrupted by technical issues, but we were pleased to open the door to a greater use of technology in expanding our reach. As part of our program, we had requested referrals of exceptional volunteers. As it turned out, we received many more than we could include in our brief program. We ran all the pictures and names submitted on the big screen during each musical event and we’ll be featuring each story on our Facebook page. Thanks so much to those who contributed stories and those who serve.
The regional organizations continue to grow and connect. If you or someone in your community is interested in participating as a center or regional representative, please refer them to me at ltaylor@cslsimi.org.

Science of Mind Archives & Library Foundation Update
It has been an exciting summer at the Science of Mind Archives and Library Foundation. The Archives has self-published two books, Chronicles of Religious Science: Volume 1: The Early Years, 1926 through 1959, and Extension Study Course In The Science of Mind: Volume 1 Lessons 1-12.
Chronicles of Religious Science, by Rev. Dr. Marilyn Leo, is a history of the Religious Science movement with interviews, quotes, and commentary from 1926 through 1959. Chronicles provides a series of narrative snapshots, extrapolated from thousands of documents including organizational minutes, resolutions, and bylaws, along with personal correspondence, newsletters, and interviews. Volume I is available on our website and on Amazon.com.
Extension Study Course In The Science of Mind is a re-printing of the 1953 edition that contains the original letter from the Dean of the Institute of Religious Science, as well as a question and answer section featuring questions from students and answers from Dr. Ernest Holmes and Dr. Reginald Armor. The original 1953 version contained 48 individual lessons and was used as a teaching aid to accompany The Science of Mind textbook. The Archives is publishing the study course as a four-volume set, and Volume 1, containing lessons 1-12, is currently available on our website: Extension Study Course and also on Amazon.com.
Also available on our website are over 200 eBooks by Ernest Holmes, recordings of Ernest Holmes’ radio talks, and all of the Science of Mind magazines in PDF format from 1950-2007. We are working on scanning and digitizing SOM magazine issues from 1927 - 1949 and currently the 1927 through 1934 issues are available to download at no cost.
